The local cinema, like always, got a beating from Hollywood blockbusters in August 19-23, 2009 based on Box Office Mojo Philippines.
Pixar’s newest animated flick Up emerged the most successful over that weekend collecting more than PhP46 million (using US$1=PhP48.5 conversion). Up was followed by action franchise G. I. Joe with almost PhP22 million. Star Cinema’s offering And I Love You So closed the top 3 with more than PhP10 million, with its total gross amounting to more than PhP36 million as of August 23.
And I Love You So‘s gross may still be a huge amount but it is low relative to other Star Cinema movies. The recent friction between the movie outfit and SM Cinemas can be blamed for this. The issue led to fewer theaters screening the movie. SM Cinemas accounts for a huge chunk in the total number of movie houses in the country.
However, the Sam Milby-Bea Alonzo starrer topped the local box-office chart followed by LOL (Love on Line) with more than P10 million and OMG (Oh My Girl) which collected only PhP200,000 over that weekend but adding to its total, close to PhP22 million.

bakit nga walang box office results news ang tarot? di rin pala nakatulong ang paglabas ng trailer niya sa abs-cbn?
antayin na lang nating ang nieves sa december fimfest. pero kung di nakatulong si marian sa desperadas & shake, rattle & roll last december, pano kaya ang nieves?
napanuod ko yung last shake rattle & roll, ang panget! all 3 episodes. di na napantayan ang original version ng lahat ng sequels.

box office mojo isn’t accurate, FYI. the figures are not nationwide, sa metro manila lang. and even then, selected cinemas lang ang kinukuhanan. tapos a big chunk of that sa SM cinemas pa, so mababa talaga ang box office figures sa site na yan. If you want the real gross of the film, ask the bookers kung tingin ninyo padded ang figures ng star cinema. (pero to tell you the truth, unlike other studios like GMA films and REgal, once naglabas sila ng figures, totoo yun. pag hindi nakameet ng expectations ang isang movie, they just choose to keep quiet. dun malalaman kung flop ang movie nila)
